New TFT Display for the Parking Meter of Tomorrow
With PrestoOne, IEM SA is developing a compact, connected and scalable parking meter for a modern and intelligent parking management. As part of the further development of the existing project, particular focus was placed on improving the user experience and integrating the latest payment technologies.
The key requirements included a fast, intuitive and responsive user interface as well as support for modern payment methods. These include contactless NFC payments, debit and credit cards, and e-wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay. For convenient operation, the parking meter features a 7-inch TFT display with touch functionality. The touchscreen enables users to enter their vehicle registration number easily, supporting a fast and intuitive purchasing process.
Technical Challenges in Integrating the TFT Display
One of the key challenges was the integration of NFC technology. Despite the limited installation space, optimal functionality had to be ensured. To achieve this, a continuous NFC antenna in the form of a PCB frame was developed.
The NFC antenna and the payment method are separated by a 6 mm-thick cover glass as well as additional TFT display components. Achieving optimal signal strength under these conditions required precise software fine-tuning.
The mechanical integration of the various layers also required the highest level of precision. The metal frame, double-sided tape, foam tape, LCD, NFC antenna and cover glass had to be precisely coordinated and accurately assembled.
Further challenges included the demanding implementation of multi-layer ceramic printing and the optimization of the touch firmware to ensure reliable operation in wet conditions and under highly fluctuating temperatures. As the parking meter is permanently installed outdoors, weather-resistant materials and a robust construction also had to be taken into account.
Our TFT Display Solution for PrestoOne
Based on a standard 7-inch IPS TFT display, an optically bonded PCAP touchscreen was developed specifically for PrestoOne. The display unit features a 6 mm-thick cover glass with IK10 impact resistance, meeting the high requirements for robustness and durability in public outdoor environments.
In addition to the TFT display with touch functionality, the complete mechanical mounting solution, including the metal frame, was also developed. A specially designed continuous NFC antenna on a PCB frame enables contactless payment functionality despite the extremely limited available space.
The individual components were considered as a complete system and coordinated in terms of aesthetics, mechanics and functionality. The mounting positions were also optimized several times throughout the project to make the best possible use of the available space.
Robust TFT Touch Display for Outdoor Use: With the developed TFT display solution, PrestoOne features a robust and seamlessly integrated user interface that is optimally tailored to the requirements of a modern parking meter.
The 7-inch TFT touchscreen enables intuitive operation, while the integrated NFC technology supports convenient contactless payments. At the same time, the robust construction with 6 mm-thick cover glass and IK10 protection provides the necessary resistance for daily outdoor use.
By closely coordinating the TFT display, touch functionality, NFC, mechanics and assembly, a compact, reliable and technically sophisticated complete solution was created. The result combines modern display technology with high robustness, intuitive operation and an appealing design – specifically developed for use in an intelligent parking meter.
